If you’d have walked in my house at certain times unannounced since having children, you might be forgiven for thinking I had gone on strike or been MIA due to the chaos. It’s a constant battle for me with multiple children, schedules and work projects, everyone’s various hobbies, as well as 4 of us obsessed with clothes and accessories. The difficulty is though, that all 5 of us crave organisation and ease within a well functioning house.
I think it’s so important to think about the clutter within our minds and I’m often quick to declutter the thought patterns that no longer serve a purpose. Similarly I find when my environment is also cluttered, it impacts the way I function – in fact my whole family- and this then impacts how we operate as a team, how happy/calm or frustrated we are and it then has the potential to cascade into complete disarray. The problem is, I find it much more challenging these days to deal with the external clutter than the internal, so I thought with us now officially in Spring and with talk of spring cleaning, I would ask a professional her thoughts on the impact of clutter to help give me some motivation.
Debbie from Clutterama is a professional Declutterer & Organiser I met at a local networking event in Leicestershire. I loved her kind caring nature and could straight away see why her clients find her so easy to talk to and feel comfortable and confident in her helping them with all their home organisation needs.
Debbie, tell us a bit about yourself…
Hi, I started life as an oncology nurse in Nottingham & Leicester after 20 years. I retired for family commitments, and I loved nursing and helping people. During lockdown I decided I needed to do something for myself but could still help people. I’d previously helped many friends get organised & declutter so I wondered if I could do this as a job and was shocked to discover there is a whole world out there of declutterers. I took a course with APDO ( association of professional declutter & organisers) joined them & here I am today 🌸
Tell us about the services you offer…
I offer many services which all surrounds declutter & organising. I help to prepare you for moving home & moving you in. I support people downsizing or moving into care, I support people with hoarding tendencies who become long term clients. I help busy families who just need help to get sorted from the kitchen to the bedrooms, loft to garage.
What impact does a cluttered or disorganised home have on us?
The impact of clutter in our lives is underestimated and not always considered, but it affects our mental & emotional wellbeing more than we realise. But if you think about waking up in a room that is overwhelmed with things, no space, then how can we think clearly, we too become overwhelmed. The saying “cluttered home, cluttered mind” so simple but true 🌸
Do you think it’s important to see our environment as an extension of our own wellbeing?
Without a doubt our environment is an extension of our health & wellbeing. Life balance is so difficult, but we can be in charge of our environment especially our space at home, our sanctuary, our place we should feel happy. Life is already so hectic but even just one space for us to go that is calm & decluttered can make a difference 🌸
What are the biggest challenges for you?
My biggest challenge is really with myself as I really want to do a good job to support people to achieve the best result, which is for them to improve their well-being and making their space feel wonderful 🌸
What common mistakes do people make within their home when it comes to organisation and clutter?
I would say the mistakes people make is feeling that they can’t do it & feeling ashamed. The idea of decluttering is not about achieving perfection or trying to reach for what is not possible. It’s about you and what makes you feel happy & safe in your environment by reducing clutter, it’s not about having a show home🌸
